“When the Ground Breaks: Walk About Series” with Artist Elaine Angelopoulos

When the Ground Breaks: Walk About Series

Walk About’s are inspired group walks led by artist, Elaine Angelopoulos into neighborhoods that hug the Atlantic Yards Project. Together we will meditate on the sites of the neighborhood and its functionality as a urban community, despite the ongoing construction nearby. Walks will occur monthly, beginning at 1pm, in front of Soapbox Gallery, located at 636 Dean Street. All Walk About’s will be an hour long. Story Collection sessions will follow from 2-3pm in Soapbox Gallery.

WHEN THE GROUND BREAKS by ELAINE ANGELOPOULOS at Soapbox Gallery

WHEN THE GROUND BREAKS by ELAINE ANGELOPOULOS

In part of The Kickin’ It group exhibition curated by Suzan Shutan

EXHIBITION:
Sunday, MAY 29 – Wednesday, JUNE 8, 2011

Reception:
Saturday June 4, 2011 4:00-7:30pm

A giant window map with arranged artifacts and ephemera loaned from residents of the neighborhoods surrounding the Atlantic Yards Project pays homage to the local community conscious of and dedicated to challenge big business and government dealings surrounding the Atlantic Yards Project.  With a flyer titled “Loan Me Your Stuff”, Angelopoulos asked residents to loan her anything that reflected their experience of living in Brooklyn pre and post Nets invasion.

The perception she envisioned for her artwork was to translate the Soapbox piece into a public, live, and thriving material archive, reliquary, and or shrine. The array of objects and ephemera combined allow an openly fragmented narrative of the several neighborhoods directly affected by the changes that bind them together.

Angelopoulos extends a big thank you those who donated items to the installation, who donated funds on Kickstarter, to Jimmy Greenfield, Director of Soapbox Gallery, and to Suzan Shutan, Curator of the Kickin’ It Exhibition.

STORY COLLECTION:
Saturday June 4th, 2011 2:00 – 4:00pm (and through opening)
Sunday   June 5th, 2011 4:00 – 6:00pm

Angelopoulos will be recording locals and visitors who wish to recollect their thoughts on urban change and development.

Artist seeks materials for Soapbox Gallery exhibit

CALLING ALL BROOKLYN CITIZENS … I NEED YOUR HELP!!

KINDLY LOAN ME … for 10 days ( from May 28 to June 8 ) … an artifact, piece of furniture, photograph, poem, story, sign, or any product that reflects your experience pre and post NETS neighborhood construction …. for the window of Soapbox Gallery, Brooklyn.

I am an artist who was invited to exhibit in “Kickin It”, a six-week series of community engagement events starting April 30 and running every Saturday & Sunday (mid day-eve) through June 23. The success of my work depends upon collecting objects, which will get incorporated into a new artwork for the window.

I want the Soapbox space to be perceived as a public, live, and thriving material archive, reliquary, and or shrine. At the end of my exhibition, all loaned items will be returned to their rightful owners. Your work will be documented and you will be credited in an online archive.

If you are interested, please contact ASAP Elaine Angelopoulos:  Apoulet@earthlink.net
