Public Hearing: Barclays Center Liquor License

April 9, 2012

WHEN: Tuesday, April 10, 6:30 PM
WHERE: 78th Precinct, 65 6th Avenue (btwn. Bergen/Dean Streets)

Dear Neighbors:

The new operators for the Barclays Center arena are applying to the State Liquor Authority for a full liquor license to serve the estimated 18,000 patrons that will be at each arena event. But at this date, neither the arena operators nor the City has presented information to local residents about plans to control the sale and consumption of alcohol at the arena, or how such sales may affect the quality of life in surrounding neighborhoods. Keep in mind arena patrons are being routed from the arena patron parking lot to the arena via Dean and Pacific Streets.

Please go to the meeting and ask the State Liquor Authority to make Barclays Center’s operations safer for our neighborhoods with these steps:

  • Stop alcohol sales 45 minutes before the end of an arena event, after half time at an NBA basketball game, or at 11:00PM, whichever comes first.
  • Sales of alcoholic beverages should occur only during events.
  • No more than two twelve-ounce beers, or four and a half ounce wine or cocktails should be sold per purchase.
  • No sales of alcoholic beverages outdoors.
  • Ask the Community Boards for a public hearing before the license is renewed so problems can be addressed.

WHEN THE GROUND BREAKS by ELAINE ANGELOPOULOS at Soapbox Gallery

May 31, 2011

WHEN THE GROUND BREAKS by ELAINE ANGELOPOULOS

In part of The Kickin’ It group exhibition curated by Suzan Shutan

EXHIBITION:
Sunday, MAY 29 – Wednesday, JUNE 8, 2011

Reception:
Saturday June 4, 2011 4:00-7:30pm

A giant window map with arranged artifacts and ephemera loaned from residents of the neighborhoods surrounding the Atlantic Yards Project pays homage to the local community conscious of and dedicated to challenge big business and government dealings surrounding the Atlantic Yards Project.  With a flyer titled “Loan Me Your Stuff”, Angelopoulos asked residents to loan her anything that reflected their experience of living in Brooklyn pre and post Nets invasion.

The perception she envisioned for her artwork was to translate the Soapbox piece into a public, live, and thriving material archive, reliquary, and or shrine. The array of objects and ephemera combined allow an openly fragmented narrative of the several neighborhoods directly affected by the changes that bind them together.

Angelopoulos extends a big thank you those who donated items to the installation, who donated funds on Kickstarter, to Jimmy Greenfield, Director of Soapbox Gallery, and to Suzan Shutan, Curator of the Kickin’ It Exhibition.

STORY COLLECTION:
Saturday June 4th, 2011 2:00 – 4:00pm (and through opening)
Sunday   June 5th, 2011 4:00 – 6:00pm

Angelopoulos will be recording locals and visitors who wish to recollect their thoughts on urban change and development.

Artist seeks materials for Soapbox Gallery exhibit

May 22, 2011

CALLING ALL BROOKLYN CITIZENS … I NEED YOUR HELP!!

KINDLY LOAN ME … for 10 days ( from May 28 to June 8 ) … an artifact, piece of furniture, photograph, poem, story, sign, or any product that reflects your experience pre and post NETS neighborhood construction …. for the window of Soapbox Gallery, Brooklyn.

I am an artist who was invited to exhibit in “Kickin It”, a six-week series of community engagement events starting April 30 and running every Saturday & Sunday (mid day-eve) through June 23. The success of my work depends upon collecting objects, which will get incorporated into a new artwork for the window.

I want the Soapbox space to be perceived as a public, live, and thriving material archive, reliquary, and or shrine. At the end of my exhibition, all loaned items will be returned to their rightful owners. Your work will be documented and you will be credited in an online archive.

If you are interested, please contact ASAP Elaine Angelopoulos:  Apoulet@earthlink.net

Soapbox Gallery is located at 636 Dean Street, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, NY 11238. Visit on the web at http://soapboxgallery.org/

Summer Streets comes to Vanderbilt Avenue this Saturday – ESPN to screen World Cup games on the avenue

The kick-off for Summer Streets on Vanderbilt begins this Saturday, June 12 with a World Cup celebration including a screening of the World Cup matches outdoors on Vanderbilt Avenue. ESPN will be sponsoring an open-air viewing of the games on a large high-definition projection cube that will be set-up in the middle of Vanderbilt Avenue between Dean and Bergen Streets.  ESPN will also be sponsoring the ESPN Interactive Zone, which will include lots of games and give-aways.
