This Thursday, May 19th, the traffic mitigation and roadway improvement plan for the Barclay’s Center’s opening will be presented publicly for the first time.  It is our understanding an additional ESDC conducted public forum and/or presentation will be made in June.

The changes they are likely to announce are described in the Project’s FEIS. As outlined there, the largest single change is the elimination of northbound traffic on 4th Avenue from Pacific Street to Atlantic. The plans also include the widening of 6th Avenue so that it can be turned into four lanes, and the widening and creation of two of lanes of traffic on Pacific Street between 6th and Carlton. The widening of 6th Avenue has apparently been set aside for the time being.

What will be implemented will affect traffic and pedestrian circulation in significant ways in our immediate area.  We believe representatives from ESDC and NYC DOT should come directly to our community to answer our questions and address our concerns. Together with the Carlton Avenue Association, we have invited them to attend a joint meeting ASAP. If such a meeting occurs, it will now be in June.

In the meantime, we are proceeding with our May meeting one week late. Our focus will be preparations for our block party and the traffic mitigations/roadway improvement plan.

Thanks,

Peter Krashes
President
